This technique is widely used in construction, manufacturing and repair, allowing for the creation of structures and components with high durability and strength.
Skills Developed
Welding develops technical skills in operating equipment and various welding techniques. Welders have a high attention to detail for producing high-quality welds. It also fosters problem-solving abilities, manual dexterity, safety awareness, and the capacity to read blueprints, all while promoting teamwork and collaboration on projects.
This introductory welding class teaches students the basics of Oxy-Acetylene cutting, Gas Metal Arc Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding and Plasma Arc Cutting. It also covers general and welding safety as well as general metal working procedures. Students will become familiar with basic blueprint reading, weld symbols, welding related math, and measurement. This course will also create a foundation of Welding theory and Metallurgy using physical science applications. As their skill level is developed, small projects will be introduced throughout the year. Students can participate in an annual SkillsUSA competition and gain valuable certifications through the American Welding Society.

Welding Technology 2 allows students to build upon prior learning and engage in more advanced welding processes: Flux Cored Arc Welding and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding. Instruction emphasizes advanced GTAW with alloys such as aluminum and stainless steel, along with blueprint reading, drawing and design, specifications, billing of materials, and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS). Coursework covers welding in all positions and on various joint configurations and may include multiple welding processes. Students gain familiarity with basic metallurgy pertaining to the weldability of metals, structural joints, and safety in the welding industry, while also having the opportunity to design and fabricate metal projects. Instructor approval is required before enrollment. Students can participate in an annual SkillsUSA competition and gain valuable certifications through the American Welding Society.
